The imported wine market will likely enter a fast-growth period in the coming years
The average wine consumption in China is only 0.5 liter per capita, which is 5.5 liters less than the international level of 6 liters per capita. Based on China¡¯s population of 1.3 billion, theoretically, there is room for at least another 7 billion liters in China¡¯s wine market. China¡¯s wine imports increased at an annual rate of at least 60% over the past three years. The imported wine market will likely enter a fast-growth period in the coming 2-3 years.

Many exporters commented that Chinese wine market has been building quite steadily and there is a genuine interest in matching quality wine with very good Chinese food. The current average price of imported wine has dropped to the mass consumption level from an unreachable high level five or six years ago. Its consumer base has also been extended from including just the traditional high-end few to one that¡¯s more diversified and includes Chinese restaurants, private customers, and group-purchasing from big companies and governments. Consuming regions have also been gradually expanding to central and western China from the eastern coastal areas. As demand for high-quality wine in China continues to rise, the future is looking bright for wine maker exports.
